Anya Martin McMillen

ANYA MARTIN, Founding Artistic Director, writer and director
Anya Martin is a writer, director and the Founding Artistic Director of Hiawatha Project. Martin has worked in New York with the Vineyard Theatre, West End Theatre, Epiphany Theater Company, and International Wow, and regionally with Arena Stage and the Living Stage in D.C.  In Pittsburgh she has worked with City Theatre Company, Bricolage Production Company, The New Hazlett Theater, ArtUp and the Mattress Factory.

Martin specializes in writing and directing devised works with ensembles of artists. As a writer/director Martin’s “Camino” was praised as “smart, sharp and witty, not to mention spoken in three languages” (City Paper) with “scenes of imagination and poetic insight” (Pittsburgh Post Gazette.) Her show “Anthropological Data: with actual human footage!” was featured in Carnegie Mellon University’s International Festival.  “Teatro Latino de Pittsburgh” was commissioned and produced as a part of Pittsburgh 250 celebrations.  In 2015 “JH: Mechanics of a Legend” was a part of the New Hazlett’s competitive CSA Performance Series. Her one woman show, “Muslims, Mennonites, and Mommies” was presented at the Mattress Factory as a part of ArtUp’s acclaimed Sites of Passage.

Martin is an Adjunct Professor in directing at Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama where she also received her BFA in Directing. Martin earned her MFA in Theater from Sarah Lawrence College with a focus on devised and experimental works. She is a 2011 Flight School Fellow with Creative Capital/Pittsburgh Filmmakers, and a Pittsburgh Magazine “40 Under 40” honoree for 2013. She was an artist in residence in 2013 for the New Hazlett Theater, and a Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Award nominee for Emerging Artist in 2016.  She is a member of the Dramatist Guild.

HEATHER IRWIN
, Community Coordinator
Heather is the Community Coordinator for Hiawatha Project, as well as actor, willing administrator, and idea generator.  Heather is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where she received a BA in Theater and English Literature. She has performed in two national tours with The Hampstead Stage Company (Barnstead NH) prior to relocating to Chicago, IL. Chicago credits include Aunt Julie Bot in Heddatron (Sideshow Theatre Company as part of the 2011 Steppenwolf Garage Rep Series), Ensemble Member in Strangerland (Sideshow Theatre Co), Jennet in The Lady’s Not for Burning (NEIU Stage Center Theatre), Lisa in Private Eyes (NEIU Stage Center Theatre), and Ensemble Member in Night Caps 2: Short Works Festival (Lincoln Square Theatre Company). She has also worked in administrative roles for The City Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA), Porthouse Theatre (Kent, OH), the Chicago Humanities Festival (Chicago, IL) and Sideshow Theatre Company (Chicago, IL). Heather is currently an Artistic Associate with Sideshow Theatre Company. In addition to seeking out awesome artistic experiences, Heather is hard at work raising her two young sons and perfecting her curling skills (yes, the one played on ice with brooms) with her husband, David.

TENÉ CROOM, Publicist
 Tené Croom, is the publicist for JH: Mechanics of a Legend and co-chair of the Black Press Task Force for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), is a veteran broadcast journalist and public relations executive. Tené is now President of Tené Croom Communications and has had as clients Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company, Pittsburgh Branch of the NAACP, Black Stuntmen’s Association, actor Ji-Tu Cumbuka, among others.

RENATA ALEMAN, Social Media Manager

Renata is the social media manager for Hiawatha Project’s new play JH: Mechanics of A Legend.  Renata is a graduate of Allegheny College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and spent serving the community of Meadville as a Bonner Scholar. Renata currently works at the Jewish Community Center as a digital associate. She is very honored to be a part of such an amazing project like JH: Mechanics of a Legend.
